These are some tips I’ve used when i started writing Copy.

Jumping right into the ocean will not teach you How to Swim.

Similar is the case with Copy Writing; You HAVE TO KNOW WHO YOU’RE TALKING TO.

The person you’re talking to must feel that you’re actually talking to them.

The customer must feel that you’re some goofy spy who has been following them around and has the exact asnwer to their problem.

  • What keeps them up at night?
  • What do they really want but are not receiving?
  • What is stopping them from making that purchase decision?

You’re looking for a PURPLE CANDY. You have scouted all the shops. You have asked your near and dear ones to find you a PURPLE CANDY. All your efforts have failed.

What are you going to do now?

What if at the exact moment when you’ve given up hope, I come with a PURPLE CANDY at your doorstep?

Wouldn’t you be delighted to buy your PURPlE CANDY from me?

This is what you’ve to do while you write a copy.

Your research will tell you:

  • What your customers are looking for?
  • What kind of solutions they want?
  • Which offers will attract them?

Use this to bait the hook and BANG, hit the right pain point.

If you’re looking for a new phone to buy, you’re not going to look at the technicalities of it.

You simply want to know that whether you’ll be able to take GOOD PICTURES, Download More Movies or Get More Battery Life if you buy that phone.

Instead, I keep on telling you about the material used to make the body of the phone.

Will you be interested in buying from me?

No, you won’t.

Every time you come across a Feature of your product which you want to portray, ask these two questions:

  • Which means?
  • So What?

I read about these in Jesse Forrest’s blog about converting Features into Benefits.

My phone is made of XYZ material, which means that your phone will work even in water.

Now I’m interested. Because you’re talking about MY BENEFITS.

Summary of things to do before you start writing your copy

  1. Research about your audience
  2. Give them exact solutions to the problems they are facing right now
  3. Talk about them always

I’m amazed, I have to admit. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s
equally educative and amusing, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head.
The problem is an issue that not enough people are speaking intelligently about.
